The Inner City (Icheri Sheher) of Baku, the historical center that emerged during the medieval period, is characterised by high population density combined with efficient social comfort. Historically established Muslim cities have undergone development in the modern era on a completely new, non-traditional ways for Eastern culture. As a result, a regularly planned new city of European type has been appended to the historical medieval city, without merging into a unified organism with it. This has led to distortion of the historical core, and superficial interest in heritage preservation has caused fragmented reconstruction of individual monuments.
