Abstract

Garabagh Toponyms and Their Translation into Foreign Languages

Toponyms comprising the majority part of the vocabulary is the most precious source of reflection of the history, language, ethnogenesis, national identification, geographical borders of the nation it belongs to. Hence its profound study ensures historical, geographical and linguistic evidences that the territory belongs to which nation, which in its turn prevents falsification of a nation’s history. Therefore the research of toponyms is of upmost importance and vital. However despite the scope of research of different types of toponyms these works have not been spread enough beyond the Azerbaijan borders resulting at unsatisfactory introduction of Azerbaijani onomastics and toponyms to the world. While armenians, who have had their eyes on our lands for ages have been trying to distort our toponyms making their own and introduce themselves as a nation with ancient history but us as a conquorer. They have not sufficed with the territories of Western Azerbaijan, now try to apply the same thing to Garabagh. Considering all these facts, following the Glorious Victory, state standards were set by the “Rules of transliteration of geographical objects’ names of the Azerbaijan Republic into English alphabet”, which will allow the translation of the toponyms into English from original names, not from russian translation and this will facilitate our proof of who has always been the owner of these lands. In this article the ways of transliteration were indicated.
